What Just Happened?

You may have heard it said that those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. While you have probably heard that particular phrase more times than you can count, have you ever stopped to consider just what it means?

When it comes to looking forward to a new year and setting out goals for positive change in your life, those words take on a rather profound meaning. That’s especially true when you realize that to move forward you first need to take a few minutes and look back. How?

1. Relax and Remember last year
2. Ask what experiences you have had
3. Discover what you learned from those experiences

Then embrace what you have learned – both good and bad. How does this change your approach to the new year?

A quick look at the past is one of the greatest tools in looking toward the future so that you can plan where to go next.

You Cannot take it With You

Well, you can, but why would you want to?

Starting the New Year with a lot of baggage from the old year is only going to drag you down in the long run. That is where you need to assess what projects you still have on your plate at the end of the year and determine what you can do to clear it out before the end of the year. Ask:

1. Do I still need to do this?
2. Is this something that I need to do or can I give it to someone else?
3. What is a reasonable timeframe for finishing this?

Clutter in all forms is quick to weigh us down. Do not drag what you do not need into the next year. Instead, do what you must to leave room for the great things that are coming your way.

Put it in Writing

What we take time to write down, we are more likely to do. Why? The very act of writing things down will lend importance to what it is that we are doing and make us more likely to accomplish what we hope to.

When it comes to making your goals for the new year, one of the first things you need to do is to create a list of those goals – and of the steps, it will take to reach those goals. Then put this list where you can refer back to it often, so put it someplace that will make this a visible reminder of what you are setting out to accomplish.

Pro Tip: Add a deadline for each of these items so you can measure if you are staying on track.

Get Moving!

Probably the most common resolution going into the new year has to do with exercise. While just about everyone will start the year relatively strong, pretty soon that trip to the gym falls by the wayside. Why do we fail?

A lot of it has to do with your attitude. By not making exercise an essential part of your daily routine, you are telling yourself that it is not all that important whether you accomplish it or not.

The truth is, regular exercise will not only help you shed that holiday weight gain but will give you more energy and better overall health. That makes it easier to accomplish all those other goals you set.

So, if you genuinely want to have the best year ever, then make time for that exercise routine. Your body will thank you!

A Stranger Is A Friend I Have Not Yet Met

You can never have enough friends, especially when you want to take your life to the next level.

Why? As much as we love the people around us, the truth of the matter is that those individuals have likely been there to get you to THIS level – where you are now. Progress comes from change. So, by surrounding yourselves with new faces in the new year, you cannot help but be drawn in new directions as well. How?

1. Start by being open to new people
2. Always be willing to help someone out – whether or not you know they will return the favor
3. Cultivate acquaintances that are where you want to be

By treating the world as potential friends, you cannot help but cultivate new relationships. Who knows where that network will take you in the new year and beyond?

Learn Something New

When setting goals for the new year, it is not uncommon to figure out that you might not have the skills necessary to get where you want to go. The good news? It is never too late to learn something new. And there are a lot of ways to pick up those skills you lack. How?

• Take a class at your local community college
• Attend a lecture
• Sign up for lessons
• Read a book – or a whole list of them
• Look for an online course
• Attend a conference
• Find a mentor

Your imagination is your only limit! So get out there and learn something new. You will be surprised at where a little knowledge can take you!

Maybe It Is Time to Say Goodbye

Not every relationship is a healthy one. When making goals for the new year, a lot of people take time to declutter their lives. Sometimes that decluttering needs to extend to relationships as well. We all have co-workers, relatives, and acquaintances who only serve to bring us down.

How can we limit our exposure to negative influences without causing a lot of resentment?

1. Cut down time spent with negative individuals. Remember, if the difficult person is a relative, you can decide just how long you want to spend at the family dinner – or whether you even want to go at all.

2. Set boundaries. When the talk gets negative, end the conversation.

3. Spend more time with positive people. With your social calendar already booked, you are less likely to get caught into a social situation that is only going to bring you down.

By fostering good relationships, you will find that eventually, you will not have time for the bad. And are those not the people you want to spend more time within the new year anyway?

Walking That Tightrope

Trying to make significant sweeping changes in your life to create that best year ever can only happen if you are taking a whole-life approach to those changes. In other words, to be successful, you need to thrive not just at work, but at home and in your relationships with others as well.

Finding that balance is one of the hardest things you will ever do – but at the same time, can be one of the most rewarding. So do no't spend so much time at the office that your kids forget how you look. But do not be so caught up in the drama at home that your boss tells you to get lost. Give yourself time for what is essential. And through everything, keep things in perspective. Because what good is it to succeed in one area, if you lose everything else?

Be All You Can Be

When trying to plan for the best year ever, you need to keep in mind the most important outcome of that year – a better, stronger, more empowered you. And you can only get to that point by putting some serious effort into your personal development.

Personal Development is not just a thing that happens. Having a plan is integral to success. What is impressive is how little effort it takes to keep growing. Some simple things to add to that to do list?

• Go to a concert
• Read good books
• Explore different philosophies
• Expose yourself to new ideas and concepts
• Attend a workshop or seminar
• Listen to a podcast
• Visit museums
• Discover new cultures

While this list is by no means comprehensive, it is a jumping off point to building your mind and learning how to look at the world through new eyes. Learning leads to growth, which in turn, leads to your having your best year ever!

It Is (Always) All Up To You

That best year ever is just around the corner. The good news is you have made a plan, and you even have some solid goals about how to get there. Which means, the only thing holding you back from success is... you.

The only way you are going to keep on track and get done all these great things that are guaranteed to lead to positive change in your life is if you hold yourself accountable. Which means you have to do the work if you want to see the results. And the only way for that to happen is if you keep track of your efforts.

So grab a calendar, check things off your To Do list. Journal about your progress. By keeping an eye on your goals, you have already won half the battle.

Your best year ever is in your hands. The time to start is now!
